Dr. Shafik Sachedina of Sussex Healthcare was born in 1950 in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. He pursued his education in London, obtaining a degree in Dental Surgery from Guy’s Hospital Medical and Dental School in 1975. He practiced dentistry in England for many years and worked up some business opportunities during this time. The doctor has held the position of Head of Department at Jamati Institution. This is at the secretariat of his highness at Aga Khan in Aiglemont, France. He is in charge of coordinating the processes and programs of institutions in Ismaili Community. This makes him responsible for the 16 principal locations where the institutions are found. Additionally, Dr. Sachedina is the interface between Aga Khan Development Network programs and institutions of Ismaili communities found in Central Asia.
At the Ismaili Imamat and community, Dr. Shafik Sachedina holds numerous other positions besides being a member of the Board of Governors. The doctor is a member of the AKDN- Aga Khan Development Network Committee, member of the Ismaili Leaders’ International Forum as well as chairman of the FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance International Co-coordinating Committee. In the past, he has worked in numerous voluntary services such as holding the position of the president of the Ismaili Council United Kingdom for two consecutive terms.
Sussex Health Care, owned by Dr. Shafik Sachedina, is an independent company focused in availing healthcare support services and homes. The company is mainly based in Sussex. They have set up 20 homes, from which older people are well taken care of. They also take care of people who are mentally challenged with dementia of Alzheimer’s disease as well as adults who have physical and learning difficulties such as neurological disabilities. The homes are in the care of highly trained staff who are dedicated to taking care of the occupants on a 24-hour basis.
