Production Manager: Clay Hutson

If you’ve ever been to a concert or live event you know that what makes the event memorable isn’t just the performer, but also the sound quality, the stage sets, and all the other moving parts that are involved. As a sound engineer, tour producer, and stage manager, Clay Hutson ensures that his clients performances go on without a hitch.


After graduating from Central Michigan University with both a bachelor’s degree in theater design and a master’s degree in business administration, Clay Hutson began working with entertainment companies as a sound engineer and project manager. Eventually, Clay decided to start his own company, which has since earned a reputation as being one of the most reliable in the industry.


When the recession happened in 2008, the company that Hutson was working for at the time, like many, began struggling. Unsure of what was going to happen with that company, Hutson decided it was a good time to branch out on his own. From the beginning, Hutson set out to work hard and provide quality results to his clients; because of this, one of the most popular avenues Hutson receives business is by word of mouth. Even though Clay Hutson has seen success, he has had his share of struggles as well.


One such struggle happened shortly after starting his company. Hutson was subtracting for a production company and its client. Unfortunately, the relationship between the production company and the client went south; however, because of the quality of his work, the client still wanted to work with Hutson. He agreed to work with the client but was sued by the production company a short time later. This cost Hutson roughly $150,000 in legal fee, but, additionally, for a company just starting out, it didn’t necessarily look good for the positive reputation he was trying to earn. Luckily, Hutson made it through this difficult situation and has continued to thrive.


Clay Hutson is successful for a number of reasons. First, he is committed to working hard. He is willing to work long and odd hours to ensure a project gets completed correctly. Second, he checks all his work a minimum of three times. He does this to make sure all the kinks are worked out before go time. Third, he works with hard workers.
