Since the organization’s inception in 2015 End Citizens United has quickly grown to be a political force to be reckoned with. The organization was first formed by democratic political party members Tiffany Muller and Matt Burgess in an effort to organize political efforts against the Supreme Court ruling in the 2010 court case Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commision. As a result of this controversial Supreme Court decision, the regulations which limited corporations abilities to donate an unlimited amount of funding to political campaigns were eliminated. Since then an influx of money from the economic elite and corporate political action committees has caused the influence of big money and politics in the American political process to grow exponentially.
During the first election cycle that End Citizens United was a part of in 2016, the organization was able to generate $25 million worth of political campaign contributions. The most significant fact about these political campaign contributions was that the average contribution was only $14. This means that End Citizens United has become one of the most successful grassroots political action committees ever to exist in the American democratic system.
It is now time for the midterm elections of 2018 to take place. This represents a key chance for End Citizens United to help overturn several seats in Congress to members of the Democratic Party that are champions of campaign-finance reform. End Citizens United has promised to generate $35 million during this midterm election in order to support several members of the Democratic political party who have taken public stances against accepting contributions from corporate political action committees. Currently, there are over 100 members of the Democratic political party who have taken such a stance and to have received endorsements from End Citizens United.
End Citizens United has recently announced a new endorsement for a member of the Democratic political party that is running for office in the state of Texas. This Democratic political party member is MJ Hegar. MJ Hegar has publicly supported to bills that are going to increase the transparency and accountability of the American political process, both the DISCLOSE Act and the Government By The People Act. Additionally, MJ Hegar has also taken a public stance against accepting donations from corporate political action committees. President of End Citizens United Tiffany Muller has stated that MJ Hegar shows an obvious commitment to the Reformation of campaign-finance laws and will be a key ally in the fight to eliminate the influence of big money in politics.
