How do you stand for what you believe in when the country is so extreme that it is tearing itself apart? This is the question many Americans find themselves asking in 2017. It seems that whenever one does speak their mind, there are dozens of people ready to pounce on them as vicious insults shoot out of their mouths.
However, the greatest danger is not in speaking out, but remaining silent in a time when the truth is dying. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are two men who dared not keep silent.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are residents of Maricopa County, Arizona, where their views in favor of Hispanic immigration have put them at odds with Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Maricopa County’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been very vocal on his views of Hispanics. However, for some time, nobody but Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin knew just how deep Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s hatred for Hispanics ran. Read more: Jim Larkin | LinkedIn
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin discovered that Sheriff Joe Arpaio had committed large-scale persecution of Hispanics in the state of Arizona. This was done by firing any on the police force that did not agree with Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s racist tendencies and replacing them with those who showed open hatred for our Hispanic neighbors.
Arpaio encouraged racism by declaring he would give monetary rewards to any who brought in illegal immigrants. The only way he could fund these sick rewards was to lie in his budget and treat this money as “bonuses for extra hours.” This wasn’t even the worst. The worst thing Arpaio did was create “Mexi-cells” for Hispanics.
These cells were left especially unsanitary. The intention was to let Hispanics get sick and then underneath Arizona law, to deny them healthcare. Many Hispanics died this way.
Michael and Jim exposed Arpaio over the radio. Arpaio retaliated by gaining an illegal warrant and using it to enter their homes and threaten to detain them unless they gave him the evidence. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin knew if they remained silent, many more Hispanics would die as a result of racism. They did not bend and stood for right.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were then illegally detained. As a result of this illegal detention, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin won a settlement of $3.75 million from the Maricopa County. This funded the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.
