In an effort to kick-off “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” after the Super Bowl came to an end, Fallon gathered some of his talented friends together and filmed a music video that, honestly, turned out pretty awesome.
The music video was a re-make of Queen’s “We Are the Champions”, a fitting tune to follow the big game. In a “Brady Bunch” type of video structure that showed multiple performers at once, big stars such as Meghan Trainor, Sam Smith, Carrie Underwood, Usher, Blake Shelton, Ariana Grande, Christina Aguilera, and One Direction joined to sing the hit song completely a cappella. That’s right: No musical instruments were involved!
Fallon himself even hit the screen to start off the song. While he may not be able to compete with Blake Shelton, the late show host did a remarkably good job with his performance.
According to Dan Newlin, while the song was performed with meaning and beauty, it wasn’t totally free of “Tonight Show” humor. At one point, Blake pretends to wave at Fallon, and the host returns with a flick on the finger that turns the song over to Usher. Toward the end of the video, Fallon becomes so engrossed in the beat that he pretends to drum and swings his head in dramatic fashion.
Is this the best version of “We Are the Champions”? You’ll just have to watch the video and decide for yourself!
