KEEP BUZZING

Changing The Pace: Richard Liu Qiangdong

Richard Liu Qiangdong is a man who had an idea and made sure that it worked out. He is the founder of JD.com. His new idea began back in 1998 with a few physical stores for people to visit. He had to make a decision a couple of years later. Richard Liu could keep his stores going or jump into the arena of online shopping. Richard Liu took the latter of the two and it has paid off. Now he is one of the biggest founders in all of China and giving people what they want in a fast and timely manner. He talked about his professional career at the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland.

One of the things that he discussed early on was how the name of the company came to be. With his wife in the audience, he admitted that the name of the company came from combining the first and last names of Richard Liu Qiangdong and his first girlfriends’ name. The audience seemed to get quite a kick out of it. He started by working with his family early on and went to college in Beijing. Richard Liu tried to start his own restaurant but in his words, it failed and went belly up. This did not deter him. He merely had another idea and he went ahead with it. His life began to work out for him when his new business started to take.

He sold computer parts. In the early part of the new century, the SARS outbreak occurred. He made the choice to close the stores and go for online shopping. Now his company has become the top biggest retailer in China. He is very happy that he made the choice to become one of the worlds first online retailers in China. Richard Liu Qiangdong is a model for success in the business world today. When one concept did not work out for him he went on to the next idea. Having the determination to take his business to the next online level has made him a household name in China and around the world.
